Which Film Festival is right for you? Sydney, Perth and Melbourne step it up

May 7, 2019

While others may teach, it’s your time to do! Winter can be the time to snuggle up with a partner or friend and catch a couple of movies, but it’s also a time to get those creative juices flowing. And what a great time it is! It seems like every city in Australia is stepping up their film festival this year. Not only can you catch some quality movies, but you can have a go at entering these one-of-a-kind competitions.

2019 Sydney Film Festival
Wednesday 5th June – Sunday 16th June

This year for the first time ever, Instagram has launched the IGTV Film Festival in conjunction with VICE and the Sydney Film Festival. This short film competition asks young Australians to submit an innovative vertical film up to 10 minutes in length that is designed for Instagram’s IGTV platform. The winner will receive a sweet $5,000 cash prize. Peaked your interest yet?

If you want to get your hands dirty this year, let your creative freak flag fly and submit away! The theme is ‘Future’ and your film should address what it’s like to live in Australia today and what it may be like in years to come. But if you just want to watch the action from the sidelines, there will be a special event on June 11 where the winner is announced. Defs one to keep on the must-do list.

2019 Revelation Perth International Film Festival
Thursday 4th July – Wednesday 17th July

At Perth, you can catch the Blind Date Music Video Competition where filmmakers are matched up with musicians to make some magic music videos. Filmmakers are encouraged to select a song from a pre-chosen list and to create a music video. Then you can enjoy the shortlisted videos at a special event during the festival (date TBC) with a judging panel of music and film professionals.

While last year the film festival introduced gigs across Fremantle and Perth, this year elevates the relationship between filmmaker and musician to the next level. The screening night will showcase the best creative collaborations and offers both parties a chance for success – a music video for the band and exposure for the filmmaker!

Melbourne International Film Festival 2019
Thursday 1st August – Sunday 18th August

One for the filmmakers – the Split Second Film Competition is back for its second year. Can you make a film which warns against texting and driving that’s only 45 seconds long? If you think you’ve got what it takes – enter now!

You’ve got a chance at a $50K budget and $5K cash straight to your pocket. Also, the winner will have their short film presented across 500 screenings at the film festival.
