Thelma Plum releases new album

July 24, 2019

Crack out the tissue box – Thelma Plum’s latest album, Better in Blak, is an absolute powerhouse. She explores her autobiographical journey of how she transformed a period of her life from deep pain and sadness into courage and self-growth.

Like many people in the public light, Thelma Plum has experienced her fair share of online abuse. Despite wanting “to curl up into a ball and quit music forever” after one particularly awful day, Thelma Plum wrote ‘Better in Blak’. The passionate title track became a pop gem that was a positive proclamation of her identity as a Gamilaraay songwriter.

The album is deeply personal and challenged Thelma Plum to embrace vulnerability in a way like never before. “I’m talking about a part of myself that I haven’t really sung about in my other songs. It’s very much about my identity and also about healing,” she said. “To write about how I’m feeling and to see that on a piece of paper, it’s almost like I’m telling myself how I feel. It’s like therapy, basically.”

There are some impressive collaborations on the album as well. Her song ‘Made for You’ was written during a period of her life where she was deeply in love and serves as the closing track of the album and was co-written with Aussie legend Paul Kelly and The Beatles royalty Paul McCartney. The story of the collaboration is something of a fairy tale, “Paul McCartney came into the studio just to pick something up. I’d left for the day…He wrote a part, a guitar part, the main guitar part for the song and plays it on the record”.
