In preparation for Vivid this year, from 24th May to 15th of June, we’ve curated the best of the must-see acts. From music to special talks, and of course gorgeous light displays, this year has it all. The only thing it’s missing? You!
The top of our must-do list? Academy Award winning director Spike Lee is leading a 90-minute conversation on race in the media. This talk, held on the 1st of June, will be Lee’s first public appearance in Australia…ever! He will be sharing insights on the intersection between film making and social advocacy.
Meanwhile over in Carriageworks, you can catch the legendary FKA Twigs on the 9th of June. Not only is she skilled in songwriting and singing, she’s also a director and dancer. Known for her genre-bending work, expect a night of music blending electro, punk and R&B.
If a warehouse dance party is more your vibe, don’t miss Curve Ball on the 8th of June, running for the fourth year. Catch a juicy line up comprised of Mallrat, Hayden James, Touch Sensitive, and Set Mo. The event is known for being a perfect fusion of quality dance music and stunning visuals, a completely immersive musical and visual experience. Are you getting your wallet out yet?
In between all your music hopping don’t forget the check out some truly awesome installations. Dutch artist collective Toer has created a ‘Firefly Field’, a delicate light installation that imitates a family of 500 fireflies hovering above the ground and mimicking the light up rituals of fireflies looking for love in the mating season, which sounds way more romantic than swiping on Tinder. You can find this buzzing around the Royal Botanic Garden.
If bugs aren’t your thing, be sure to check out the amazing Opera house sails which are being designed by Björk’s music video director, Andrew Thomas Huang. This year, the sails will be inspired by native flora and feature a dancer performing across the sails.
With so much to do and see, we’ve included some handy accommodation options for you to make sure you don’t miss a thing. Check out the details below!
