Review: Curve Ball

June 12, 2019

We took our own recommendation from our ‘Best of Vivid’ feature a couple of weeks back and checked out Curve Ball over the long weekend. You know what they say, location, location, location, and praise be, having Curve Ball hosted at the iconic Carriageworks was the perfect fit for the warehouse dance party vibes.

The day-to-night transition for the festival was matched by the light installations, live acts, and video artworks as every component of the festival slowly progressed to a more intense and party-centric atmosphere as the night went on. The industrial space was well-used with light and video installations that featured vibrant colours, interesting soundscapes, and the perfect Instagram opportunity.

While the lights were very pretty and nice to look at, what made Curve Ball a great night out was the poppin’ dance tunes and quality line-up. Artists like Touch Sensitive, Hayden James, Mallrat and Young Franco graced the stage – all no strangers to sweaty masses of moving bodies on their dancefloors.

Some of our highlights? Mallrat was an unexpected and appreciated lightness to an otherwise electro-heavy line-up. You’ll be familiar with her latest hit ‘Groceries’ and her recent collaboration with Basenji on ‘Nobody’s Home.’ Her melodic voice and sugary sweet stage presence will leave you with a good taste and a jump to your step.

Hayden James was another highlight for almost opposite reasons. While Mallrat was light and fun, Hayden James was a nonstop dance party. Curve Ball proved to be a perfect venue for Hayden James to try out his latest single ‘Nowhere to Go’ only released a couple of days before the festival.

Hayden James has truly cemented himself in the electro scene as a perfect blend between pop and tech, receiving worldwide acclaim and loyal fans. Chart-topping hits like “Better Together”, “Just Friends,” and “Numb” were especially fun to have a dance to and singalong choruses with the rest of the adoring crowd.

Want to know the best part? You can still catch both Mallrat and Hayden James live as they are about to start Australia-wide tours! We’ve included all the ticket information below, as well as some handy accommodation options if you are looking to make a trip out of it.
