5 Reasons to get to Melbourne this Winter

June 12, 2019

So, Winter has officially gone and done that thing it likes to do on an annual basis and arrived. With its inevitable arrival, many of the summer souls among us are already looking for somewhere warmer and less, well, wintery to escape to. Needless to say, Melbourne isn’t exactly that. But, whip yourself up a hot chocolate, bear with us, and read on below and for five reasons you should absolutely press pause on that quest for higher temps and instead jump on a flight to Melbourne this Winter.

Winter Night Market – 5 June to 28 August
Sometimes you just have to take your hat off (but not your coat. Leave your coat on. It’s cold out!) and admit that, yep, Melbourne’s food scene is second to none. Once you’ve got that out of the road, it’s all the easier to enjoy all that tantalising tucker. What better way to do so than at the Winter Night Market at Queen Victoria Markets? Tasty foods and toasty fires, speciality shops and, of course, Melbourne’s unique take on live entertainment. Booking flights in three…two…

Childish Gambino @ Rod Laver Arena – 17 July
After the disappointment of 2018’s cancelled tour, the notorious creative genius that is Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, is making amends in the best way possible – with a show at the iconic Rod Laver Arena. Given the man himself has insisted that his upcoming shows are likely to be among his final ever, now’s the time to see the musical mastermind do his thing!

NGV Winter Masterpieces – 24 May to 13 October
Few things warm the soul like a dose of high-quality art. As one of the country’s, nay hemisphere’s, finest art galleries, there is always an abundance on show at the National Gallery of Victoria. This winter, the gallery will be showing the latest edition of its Winter Masterpieces series, featuring China’s Terracotta Warriors alongside the latest from world-class contemporary artist Cai Guo-Qiang. The pairing of one of the greatest archaeological finds of the twentieth century and new works from an international art icon is not to be missed!

Melbourne International Film Festival – 1 to 18 August
Every cloud has a silver lining, and every Melbourne winter has a silver screen. It’s the Melbourne International Film Festival! Highlights announced thus far include the world premiere of Stan Grant’s documentary, The Australian Dream, the eagerly awaited horror-comedy Little Monsters, and the talent-packed Melbourne-based thriller Angel of Mine, featuring the likes of Noomi Rapace from the original Girl with a Dragon Tattoo and The Handmaid’s Tale’s Yvonne Strahovski. 2019’s festival is set to be one of the most exciting yet!

White Night Festival – 22 to 24 August
One for Vivid lovers, White Nights Festival is a perfect excuse to hop a plane to Melbs for a weekend. It’s touted as bidding adieu to winter of sorts, with the city coming to life in a flash of lights, food and culture. Of course, we all know those beloved Melbournians have plenty of cold weather to look forward to beyond August. This one is well worth braving the cold for.
